coolant flow problem?

I was working on assembly yesterday and noticed three casting fins (flashing) in a head port. Much of the passage was still open and I had never had a cooling problem, but they sure can not be a good thing. The furthest one in the port closed the flow more than the other two.

I went in with a long needle-nose plier and easily broke most them off. The furthest one was a little harder to reach and I also used a screw driver to pry the rest off.

Too get the pieces that the plier did not remove I used a magnet used for picking up small parts. This got most but there were still a few pieces left at the bottom. For them I magnetized a small long allen wrench and easily removed them.

Now I've got to open that sealed plastic bag on my bench that has my new head in it. I thought that I checked the ports, but now I'm not sure.
