I think the TR8 has been hanging out with Tinster's TR6.....

OK guys - the power steering pump isn't holding fluid and is howling like crazy. I'm not driving her at this point to try and prevent damage to the unit, but it clearly isn't a happy unit at this point.

I've heard the pump can be removed and rebuilt, but am wondering what other options I have....

Any ideas?
 
Hey Tom -

The weak link on the p/s system is usually the rack. Where's the fluid going? Are the rack seals leaking? Could be the rack is the culprit.

If it is the rack, Woody at The Wedge Shop, or Ted at TSI can fix you up.
 
mine did the same thing,only at the valve,blew the seals,bought the kit but never put it in.I just cut the belt and I drive it.....mano-a-mano
 
A bit hard at a stop,not bad on the roll. Not that much different than my TR7. I actually like it better on the Hiway.
 
Did you drain the fluid from the power unit, or simply remove the belt?

Seeing that I do need to drive the car, and the rack/pump won't hold fluid, I'm thinking that removing the belt so I don't further damage the unit would be the right thing to do. What do you think?

Seeing that I was unhappy with how light the steering was with the power assist (probably due to wear & tear) I'm choosing to look at this as a positive.
 
get the belt off quick, or you will burn the pump out. I dont mind not having power steering.I dont go to the mall or shopping.
