Controlled burn

The wildlife refuge had a controlled burn this week. My son is a firefighter for the fish and wildlife service, so these fires are his handiwork. The first photo is from my commute home on Wednesday. The next three are from later that evening when I took my daughter out there. The last is from my commute to work Thursday morning.

Last time they did a controlled burn here, it was approved by someone not even in the state and it was done during windy conditions. It got away from them and became one of the worst fires in New Mexico history

Walt, I like the third one and last one the best. We always see really heavy smoke with the burns here. Interstate 75 going south, we'd get some smoke from those fires that obscure the roadway. Usually there were warning signs about it posted a few miles before. Nerve wracking to drive through anyway.

Doc, the first four were all taken using the automatic settings on my phone. The last one was set at an f2 to get a little contrast between the mountains and the sky.
