In the time I've *not* been posting here I've:

1) Poured/finished a 12'x4'x8" concrete pad (re-enforced with 5/8" rebar, GFR concrete) to extend a "shed" at the back of the hovel so's I can turn it into a laundry/sewing room for SWMBO and ~reclaim~ area in my garage.

2) Had a YAG laser proceedure on my right eye to alleviate what to me was like looking thru a piece of wax-paper to try and see.

3) Finally read "The Fourth Estate" (Jeffery Archer), a book I'd been meaning to "get to" for a few YEARS now.

4) Managed to learn more than I ever wanted to about Firebird SQL on a Linux Fedora Core 5 server. Still going with that.

5) Not done ANYTHING on the B.

6) Viewed some beautiful sunrises/sunsets.

7) *Yet to be Determined*

heh... reminds me of a saying i've heard that's hardly appropriate for this site... glad to hear yer enjoying life again, Doc. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

ever mess with Ubuntu? Friends finally decided to make the Linux jump when their Win2k3 LAN server/ICS machine gave up the ghost (took 5 months for it to become completely useless) thanks to a plethora of virii and a bad NIC. Of course, they recruited me to come 'fine tune' (install Apache2, MySQL 5, PHP 5, DHCP3, etc.) the new server for them. Had to crash course me self in Ubuntu ways, which thankfully was Debian underneath. However, the Ubuntu GUI apps were quite nice, though I felt some of the apps were too lacking in usability and configurability.

Ubuntu seems to be a decent attempt at making Linux a "mass market" desktop OS, but the tools need more work if it's to be 'windows like' in its 'ease of use' on the server side.

Haven't tried Ubuntu here, gotta "go with what ya know" for a client's server. Even so it was a headache: ATI vid chip with NO good driver available, FC-5 with a kernel upgrade to 2.6.16 and some heavy handed hacking was what it took to get GUI interface to work... GAH. Now this Firebird DBMS is my latest challenge. I WANT to start bending other flavours around but $$ depends on my getting this plug "deployed" now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTW: Core-5 and Gnome are now quite impressive. Just be selective with YUM.

OK. I *got* the part about the concrete...

And I'm going the the beach next week, so 10-4 on "catching up with reading" (I have the Lincoln and the Truman books).

But that other stuff about YUM and Gnomes and Cores sounds like Bob Dylan lyrics...or something /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Anyway, glad your eyeballs are working again! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Just thee and me Doug, and my english is doubtful at times.

Welcome back Doc!

I'll be doin' just that t'morrow eve: Big shindig for the release of the annual "directory" SWMBO's outfit publishes. Likely be a rather less exotic emulsion, tho.

"Yellow Father who art in Rochester..."

Don't count on Father Kodak to keep you in stock for long. It's very quickly becoming a hobby-niche industry.

Us silver-halide guys need to stick together... it's a dying breed. A certain company we both know that I used to work for has shut down all of their regional offices, laid off half their workforce, and is selling half of their compound out here.

Nobody is making prints anymore.

I'm as guilty as the rest... snapshotty cripe just gets banged out on the dye-sub and the captured light never sees a milligram of silver. But gah... try to teach SWMBO what a decent skin tone looks like....

I understand the Great Yellow Box has halted all print paper production months ago. You're likely correct about not counting on 'em much longer for silver based media... I've been a 'chrome guy for a looong time. C-2/3...

We jumped into the digital end with graphics/design long ago but I'm a hold-out with the light images. I ~LIKE~ silver. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Fujifilm still makes some, but even the big photolabs send it out for processing anymore.
