Concourse Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

What if you have a car that won many concours division shows and it's getting on in years with a few flaws from having been used? Drop down to the popular vote show and you'll be hated for it.

Put it on the showfield with a DISPLAY ONLY placard.

The efforts of a quality restoration will still be appreciated.

The fact that the car has been driven will be appreciated.

The fact that you are making your car available as an example of what is correct...without competing for any hardware...will REALLY be appreciated.

Pride of ownership does not mandate competition for awards.

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

Interesting

My car has won a few Concours and it was trailered to the show but driven the day before to get out and about and get the car seen - I had the paint detailed on both occasions

In the peoples choice - I have had mixed results -

and I don't enter that many

But I have won second and third in two different classes at the same event

We received a first in the Monte Shelton NW Classic Rally (big trophy) and the car was definitely driven hard.

The most fun is just talking about the car - whether it is at a vintage event, car show or sports car tour.

I like letting other people drive it (with me or my wife in it) - the fact that it looks nice is just pride of ownership.

Letting other people drive has allowed me to sample cars I like as well - Bugeyes - Supercharged MG's, Triumphs, Lotii (The new plural of Lotus) Jaguars et al.

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

OK, I've waited on the side lines but I must pop in.
When I hear Concours I think Pebble Beach, Amelia, places like that.
The shows that our clubs put on for the ABFM and the like ARE NOT Concours events. Those are just shows.

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

Well - the likelihood of being invited to Pebble, Amelia for any car within forum range is slim

too many unless the MG Arnolt - Triumph Italias - Ok Lotus Elites come out of the woodwork

We have an invitation to Carmel - which is as close as we will get

Yes British Unions and ABFM's are by nature not the same - no presentation of the car and it's equipment - blah blah blah

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

Rick, Didn't a fellow who drove his car to the G berg show quite a long distance in 06 win a first place in the concours judging? If I remember correctly, he had the British flag on his car and it was blue in color. I also think it was a midget. Could be wrong on the concours judging, but his car was out front where the CC cars were. PJ

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

There's only a few concourse judged shows for our MGB in the country each year that are truely judged by folks who know thess car, the NAMGBR being the main one, and Paul Hanley does indeed drive his car to these shows, at the NAMGB focus event you will several hundred MGBs there, but only a handful in the concourse judging line, most will be in the popular vote show. I've never really been into car show scene too much , but as past car club president, I ended beng on two car show boards, and got to know alot about how they work. Most of British car shows as Bob and others have mentioned is done by popular vote by all entrants in the show regardless of what kind of car they entered, so not necessarly experts on your car. I seen folks get mad because they had a perfectly original say MGB that got beat by one with alot of aftermarket items, like fancy items under the hood, aftermarket wheels and such, but you have to remember in a popular vote show people are judging the cars they like the best, not necessarly the most original car. And yes there is some "friendly" voting going on, but I always ignored others, mostly my friends asking me to vote for their car, and I never voted for my car, I always voted for the car Ilked the berst, and not necessarly for originality, I think voting for your car is somewhat class-less unless you truley feel it the best car, and I never did for my car for that very reason, while very nice, it wasn't the best one. I agree with Bob, and others if you go to a car show with expectations of winning, you already going to car shows for the wrong reasons. The very best thing you can do with this cars is drive them, not park them in show field, but going to a British car show does bring people together with a common interest and develops new friendships, and that the greatest throphy you can win by attending a car show in my opinion.

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

'cours? I thought that was something you drink. And "con" is latin for "with". So "concours" should be interpreted "got Coors?" as an alternative to "got milk?". Lighten up! (As in Coors Light).

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

Like much stuff with this LBC hobby, participation in concours shows is highly subjective. Seems to me that a number of folks really enjoy concours shows and put lots of time and energy into winning. Good for them. :yesnod:

On the other hand, you have the "wrench and drive" folks like myself who'd rather drink ditch water than participate in a concours show. I buy all of my cars to drive them, which generally isn't feasible if you're going for the top prize in a concours show.

Actually, the concours shows folks benefit us all by increasing the visibility and values of these cars in the long run. The big dollar amounts they spend on parts and service keeps a lot of people in business and employ a lot of people, too. And, it's always interesting to see the effort and discipline (and money!) that goes into building a concours show winner. For example, I've seen plenty of $40-$50,000 MGBs: that kind of money can create an industry!

I was lucky to win a "best in class" (popular judging) with my MG at a major, regional show recently. The drive home with that trophy sitting in the passenger seat next to me was maybe the best trip ever. Couldn't have done that in a "trailer queen" concours car . . . even if I had the cash to throw at winning a concours event.

Each to his own, and although I love to attend concours events and appreciate the efforts of the participants, I'm gonna drive my LBCs! :yesnod:

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

Best prize has always been the who came the farthest with their car

Coors is for drinking?
Hmmm...
Not in my household

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

At one show a few years ago, a car we then had got "Shiniest Car" and "Coolest Color". Those awards were chosen by the kids in attendance, and for me are the best we ever got!

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

I enjoy seeing these perfect, old cars (of any type....not just British), but I would not want to own one.
To each his own, but getting the right paint colour on the jack? That's surely not me.

On the other hand, I love seeing old, unrestored cars with lots of patina. The bumps and bruises on these cars are part of their history.....just like the big, ugly scar on my right arm.

Here at vintage races in the northeast USA I see a wonderful and ratty old Bugatti T35b. It's the bee's knees.

This Ferrari (below) is keen too (assuming it's real and not PhotoShopped).

Re: Concours Car Shows, What Are Your Views?

NAMGBR Concours judging sheets have been designed such that originality is equally important to condition.

A couple of times we've had an original, unrestored car outscore a just-finished restored car.

Some folks simply go too far with a restoration, forgetting that our MGs were designed and sold to be every day transportation. Over-restoring becomes their Achilles' Heal.
