My neighbor needs a car parts catalog. A friend of his has it in PDF version, about 15 meg.

But when the friend tries to email it to my neighbor, friend gets " file size exceeds maximum allowable by Charter.net"

Charter is my neighbor's email server.

Is there such a critter as a dropbox page to upload a 15 meg file, so neighbor can just go there and download it?

(I can show neighbor how to FTP, but his friend doesn't have a clue about doing that.)

I use You send it.
It is free and I send 90meg PDFs of the Bentley all the time
 
Look under file sharing sites. While much of that is used for stuff that you don't want the kids to see most seem to offer free file storage for small items for up to several months. And 15m is a small file. So he could load it to one of these as a public resource and send the name to the recipient. Then plug in the site and file name, hit download and windows explorer, or it's MAC equivilent if that's what they're using, should handle it and put the file in whatever folder they specify. Then at some point the file will go away in the public file server when it expires.

Mike, I'll check that out. My gut tells me that my neighbor's friend probably won't want to get near a site if there's the possibility of "non-kids" type stuff on it.

You can try dropbox.com I have a free account and it works well. Personal accounts start at FREE (2GB storage for free)
You can set up a folder with Dropbox and Share it with anyone via email.
 
I've used dropbox.com as well -- their free account. has worked solidly for me for a while now.
 
Decided to have the friend email me the file (I use gmail). Came through fine. I put it on a flash drive and used sneaker net to my neighbor.

That's cheating. I thought the goal was to go high-tech the whole way. If I had know that low tech solutions were admissible I would have suggested that you just print it out and send it via the US Postal service.

You should have at least driven the Mercedes over to the neighbors. :smile: :rolleyes:
 
Keith - does it count that the sneakers had flashing LEDs on the laces?

(you have no idea how I wish I *could* drive the Mercedes over to the neighbor's...)
 
FWIW, I use Google 'Drive' (used to be Google Docs) for the same purpose. No credit card required, and the first 5 Gb (of permanent storage) is free. No credit card required either.

Google Drive includes a service that keeps files synchronized between the cloud and multiple computers. Haven't tried it myself, but I hear it works well. Lots of other magic too, like collaborative editing and so on (which I also haven't tried).

Many email servers limit attachment size to 10 or even 8 Mb.
 
Didn't mean to imply that they all hosted more "mature" subjects, just that a lot do and you have to look around to be sure you stay away if you want/need. But since you got it worked out, guess it doesn't really matter now.
