Computer problem

My computer is doing something bad. I have windows xp, road runner high speed cable, on about a 3 year old computer. When I get on I have MSN as my homepage, and all was well. Today when I get on, the MSN page comes on and when I select email, or any thing on MSN, or go to my favorites, it starts to do the command and stops with about 40% of the green bars in the box at the bottom of the page. My laptop works fine, and if I access MSN from Mozzila all works as it should. Why won't my regular defalt MSN page let me browse?
I keep getting the page is not responding box.

Just reboot when it does that and you probably will be OK,,Keoke

So the problem is only when using Internet Explorer? It may be a problem with the browser itself, or with another application trying to manage it. You can try downloading the latest browser and see if that clears up the problem. Better yet, use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

You might also try clearing teh browser cache and cookies. Go to Tools, INternet Options, then on teh general tab, click Delete Cookies and Delete Files. Then try again.

How's it going this morning?

Is it only MSN that gets stuck? Does BritishCarForum have any trouble loading?

Tom

I tried everything I could think of last night, including most of the suggestions. I ran my spyware programs, window washer, rebooted and this morning it worked fine. Thanks!!

That's how my laptop problems began - real slow on uptake...its been in the shop almost 2 weeks now getting completely rebuilt (& I probably could've bought a new computer!)

Yep Tony, when you get the bill you will pro9bably wish you had. Friend of mine had his rebuilt cost him $1500.00 and all that happened was it got wet!---Keoke

Keoke - already got my bill though I've not picked it up yet....$305.16...but that included $99.99 for Kaspersky 7.0 software

At CompUSA you pay for repairs in advance!

Problem is back, tried basils idea and seemed to work, but randomly, sometimes at startup a box comes on "internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". Sometimes it lets me get on for a while and sometimes it won't!

Where do you find the latest browser as Steve S has suggested?

My computer is set for automated updates, is this what you mean?
My MSN page is different on my computer than on my laptop. The laptop all of a sudden had a different look to it a few weeks ago, but the main desk top is the same as always. Could this be part of the problem?
For example: to select hotmail is in the upper left corner, on my laptop it is now in a box.

Hi RoofMan, No this is not a windowa update it is a different browser. Just Click on the URL Steve provided and download it to your computer. All the instructions you need will be provided there.--Fwiw--Keoke

I get that error message occasionally also. Could be because I’m running IE version 6 which won’t understand v7 specific code.

Get Firefox. Set it to wipe everything on close (cache, cookies, history). Block pop-ups.

Clear all unnecessary desktop icons, turn off all the "value added" junk running resident on the taskbar (lower right).

I can't help but comment on the comments -

They're all excellent. But they sure point out what a nightmare doing all this can be, especially for most of us who use a home computer as a "communication" system.

Trying to describe problems and solutions in writing (or even over the phone) often proves impossible. We can't see the screen the other person is talking about. When I was a network manager I dreaded the phone calls which began "I can't get my email." Problem could be a complete loss of network connection, or simply having the email program minimized and "off screen".

The computer is a fantastic device, but every day, thousands of computer science engineers are working (and "improving") on thousands of different aspects of the operating systems and programs ("apps"). All that work is funneled down to the end user. And the end user has to try to figure out what it all means, how it works, and how to accomplish the end result. Reminds me of the reception desk at an office building: the receptionist sits at a nearly empty desk, but the computer display is covered with dozens of paper post-it notes with "reminders and updates" from admin.

Wonder if it was like this when the typewriter was first introduced? "Call the help desk! I can't find the shift key!".

Thank heaven we're all mutually supportive in more than LBCs!

Onward through the fog.

My Monday mornings are usually spent listening to : "I can't get on th' innernet!"

And the bane of MINE are the manufacturers' claims of "Intuitive Controls".
