Computer Desk Top Died!

Just got my laptop back from the repair shop. $80 later and its working again. He told me he has many Windows 10 computers with the same problem as mine. He also told me many users are sticking with Windows 7. I had XP for years. No problems, really. I had Vista on my old laptop - terrible.

"Correct file system, uppercase errors and rebuild master file table. Verify drive self monitoring and reporting technology status. Drive passes all diagnostics. Restore registry manually copying system software and user hives only. Functionality is restored".

Whatever all that means. Can anyone here translate?
 
Tom, the external SATA case just came and works well, even my lap top picks up everything off the old drives. Cool! :encouragement:. The new machine with one terabyte HD, will take all the info and still have a load of room left. Now I can relax again. :excitement: PJ

Those file system problems can usually be fixed by running CHKDSK, etc. They're saying the hard drive passes diagnostics (physical condition), and fortunately Win10 keeps a "backup" file structure copy on the HD. But did they give you any info on what actually caused those file system problems?

Some causes I can think of: improper shutting down, power outage, hardware installation interrupted, etc.
 
Now I'm confoozled. Are we talking about Paul's computer? or PDPlot's?

:highly_amused: It didn't get any military honors Doc! Took the HDs out and gave the rest to the trash man. LOL.
 
Guess what? It's malfunctioning again. First the little Windows icon in the lower left only works when right-clicked instead of left-clicked. Then the icons along the bottom disappear. Next, clicking the Windows icon does nothing at all. Now there is almost no way to access my docs except by a complicated route. Google Chrome works fine. I think I'll try the Geek Squad. And these things are going to drive our cars?
 
......... & I'm still trying to install a Craig Powerplay 8 track.......
I think I'll go back to the '70's.

So did the repair guys ever tell you exactly what caused that previous problem?

(I think you've got a hardware issue - not a Windows issue ...)
 
Not much info on your post, but if the drives are SATA they likely can be installed in a new computer. You could try putting in a new power supply, but it is likely the Motherboard is bad and can't be fixed. The other bad news is that new machines will be Windows 10, so all of you old programs will not be compatible. A good computer shop may be able to find a salvaged machine that would accept your drives and programs and a new install of WIN XP if you have the original operating system CD's. (Or maybe a sympathetic hobbyist like me)

No problem for me as I ordered a machine with w-7 64 in it, I had 10 and dumped it along with 8 and 8.1! You can buy just about anything with any reasonable OP system and all the bells and whistles you want if it's custom made. I didn't get it with duel boot and Linux along side of Windows as I'm playing with different Linux systems at the present. But Linux is going in it. Over the years I've become less and less a fan of Microsoft. PJ
