Computer Character map question

When I select items from the character map in system tools and hit copy, where do they go and how do I retrieve them to type? Do I still have to use control and a number? That's what I was trying to eliminate. PJ

They go to the Windows clipboard. Retrieve using "Paste" on a menu or Ctrl-V.
