Finished the job this morning and started 'er up. Usual oil smoke from manifolds but two big problems. Oil pouring out from rear of head and overheating - gauge went to the end. Randy knew right away what the oil problem was - the machine shop failed to screw back in the 5/15 bolt at the rear of the head and it got overlooked. A bolt and washer were found and installed and the problem was solved. Since the engine was slightly overfilled anyway with all the penetrating oil we poured on the studs, the oil loss was ok. The cooling system problem caused us to scratch our heads. I had installed a new 160-degree thermostat and out first guess was that if failed to open. We checked it out and it was wide open. Randy next thought a mouse might have crawled into the radiator when it was resting in the garage. he had taped off the lower outlet, but when we checked the hose at the water pump, no mouse was found. After starting it again, it worked perfecly. We figured that the problem was an airlock in the system due to removing and replacing all the hoses. Anyone else have that problem? Now it works perfectly and I'm going to put some miles on it before retorqueing the head. Thanks for all your help.
