Since there are a number of racers here, I thought I'd check.

I'm working with a race team in Sonoma and we are looking for a competition gearbox or a referral to source one.

Thanks

A ribcase SCCR box or a full on comp box?
Rut

I'll keep my eye out...I have a good SCCR box and I'm planning on going with a 5 speed, budget permitting, when the time comes.

There's a close ratio straight cut gear set on flea-bay right now. A bit pricey but not easy to come by.

Kurt.

SCCR is the most common and new gear sets are sold. This is straight cut , close ratio gear set that fits the rib cage box without modification, then next come other variations, Wheeler, Richmond, and Taylor, they are all ribcage gearboxes modified used Webster/Hewland type gears like you would find in Formula Ford, almost endless ratio choices, big advantage to this route, is dog gear engagement, and first gear ratio used so you have on track usable first gear, for example we use like 1.6 ratio first gears, so in the slower corners we could shift down to first gear, and this is huge deal, as you can keep the rpms up on the engine in slow corners, making for quick corner exit. This set up is expensive, $3-5K used is not uncommon, if Taylor could even build a new one for you these days, it would be well over $6K. I have a good friend who making dog gear sets for the rib cage, that require no mods to fit to the stock box, that offer the gear ratios we have learned over time that work the best, but he still a way's away from finishing the project though.

Thanks Hap,

The car owner has possibly located a couple at the track, so I'll either be rebuilding one of those or we'll be buying the gearset and I'll build him a "new" one.

There is another dog box option - dog engagement gearset being made by MED in UK. Spridgetmania is selling these for about $3k, but if you bought direct from MED I figure the price would be about $1800, given the current exchange rate of the pound. If you build a SCCR make sure you use a comp layshaft, the stock ones will break under racing loads (ask me how I know).

Cool, thanks for the tip on the layshaft!

I know this is old thread, actually I was Googling something about a MGB dog gear set I saw on Ebay, of all places and I ended getting linked back to this thread. Michael that dog engagement gear box Spridget Mania sells would not be much better than the standard sc/cr gear set due to it's ratios are for standing start races, like they have in the UK, so still not usable on track 1st gear. My buddy is getting much closer on his dog box, which will have the right ratio for our rolling start racing. It will comparable to this gear set in price, but made form really good steels, triple harden process and REMing finishing.
