I'm updating my newly purchased TR3 with VTR and they asked for the Commission number, body number and the engine number. I know the com. number is on the metal plate on the fire wall. Where is the body number and engine number located. I found a second metal plate with the letters and numbers stc 62 on it, plus 2 brass plates with letters/numbers EB64524 and 1069552. Are these the body and engine numbers and if so, which are which?
thanks

Body # is the EB64524 number

Engine number is stamped on the block, on the passenger side. Begins with "TS". It will be a bit higher than the commission number. The other number on the brass plate is mentioned in the "official" book by Bill Piggott thus: "The other plate has a straight six- or seven-figure number with neither prefix nor suffix. Only this latter number appears in the factory build records held by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, and little is known about the allocation or series of either body numbers."

Have you looked into getting a certificate from BMIHT? For about $50 you can get the build records on your car. Check here for details: https://www.mgcars.org.uk/namgar/bmiht/bmiht.htm

I believe that the "1069552" is also a body number. I forget which is which, but I think the seven-digit number is for the "body in white" and the "EB..." number is for the completely painted and trimmed body ready to be mated with chassis and running gear. On original cars, the "body in white" number plate is painted and the "painted and trimmed" body number plate is natural brass.

Owing to different assembly procedures, the TR3B series had only one body number plate, always starting with TSF even for the later TCF commission number series.

You will find the engine number stamped or engraved into the block just to the rear of the coil. I guess Mickey has a right hand drive TR for it to be on the passenger's side. Sorry Mickey, I couldn't help myself.

Touche', Don! Guess it's been so long since I had my 3 that I forgot. (Can't be that I'm getting long in the tooth!)
