I've heard various opinions about it. It seems that the color tuning isn't as effective as it use to be due to reformulating of gasoline. Maybe I'm wrong about that and someone will come along and correct me. I think some folks are opting for the gas exhaust analyzer because it'll give you a readout of the nasty polluting bits.
When I have to adjust the carbs, I use one. I hate to admit this, but in general I can't HEAR the difference when I use the "lift the pin" method. I know if the car dies, but can't find that sweet spot. I've been lucky enough most times to find someone who could and let them do it, but when its strictly up to me, I use both the colortune and their carb balancer. The newer UNISYNs come from China and the tolerances to far off to be an effective tool. (In order to get the bead to rise on the one I HAD, I had to almost completely choke off the engine)
I can't hear the difference either. Perhaps it's the result of too many eardrum-busting concerts as a teenager thirty years ago, or just an egregious lack of auditory sophication, but in either case, the listening method doesn't help me much!
I have two ColourTune units. Pricey initially but they work. I've done a LOT of cars with 'em, everything from four to twelve cylinders. If ya have the lolly, EGA would be more accurate but I could never justify the expense. They've become more affordable lately tho.
I have a unisyn and a colortune.. The unisyn is great and I use it. The colortune doesn't seem to work for me at all. It is more trouble than it's worth in my case.
