Colorado Grey??

Just received the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate (BMIHT) for the BJ7 I just bought. Now I'm thouroughly confused. All the numbers match, engine, body, chassis but under the color specified it's listed as "Colorado Grey"? What color is that?
Here is how it appears on the certificate:

line 6. Colour
a)exterior Colorado Grey
b)trim Grey
c)hood(top) Grey

Can someone help me clear this up? I know it's an exported car. Actually it was sent to Dusseldorf Germany. It was a european exported car, it has Kilometre-per-hour speedometer, octagonal knockoffs and a steering column lock. Also, most likely at one time, Halogen bulb headlights.

Johnny;
Yes that is a German export car. if you want to see the original color assuming it has not had a previous ground up restoration ,just look up under the dash at the under side of the Scuttle/Shroud and it should show.--FWIW---Keoke

Yes thanks Keoke for responding. When I start dissassembly I'll do that, but still, has anyone heard of Colorado Grey?
Could that be a misprint? Possibly the car was Colorado red/Grey (red over white)? Or, could it have been Colorado red only, and the grey a misprint? I'm hoping others with a certificate for their car might suggest the correct color. For instance, how were two tone cars shown on a certificate?

I am sure you have checked but in case you have not been here:

https://austinhealey.com/big.html

Gives a list of colors for each Healey.

Also none of my books show a Colorado Grey.

Bruce

Drove myself nuts trying to find something......anyway, best alternative I can come up with in the meantime is along your lines of thinking with a two-tone scheme. Colorado Red with Dove Grey is the most likely, but I am still going to keep on trying.

To my knowledge, Healey painted a very limited number of cars grey. None were called "Colorado Grey" by the factory. BMIHT has been known to get the certificates wrong. Why not ask them for clarification?
D

I'll bet the certificate is wrong. Ive never heard of Colorado Grey.

More likley is that it is Colorado Red with "Grey" interior. Also remember that this 'grey' interior isnt really grey at all, not like in modern cars. It was a parchment colour, no idea why they called it grey.

Thanks Derek I have to agree with you that the car may have been Colorado Red, but a guess is still just a guess. I have asked for a clarification from the Trust, we'll see. Interesting to note I could not find an email address for the Trust anywhere. I had to send a letter (I added a copy of their Certificate) and asked for a reply, preferrably via the internet. Hope it doesn't take a month to receive their answer.

Great! Thanks John Loftus for the email addy, here's the quick response I received.
"Dear Mr Lore,
So sorry, a typing error that I failed to pick up when checking I'm afraid. Of course it should read Colorado Red, I'll amend your certificate and get a new one in the post to you straight away. If I could ask you to destroy the certificate that you have, I'd be very grateful.

How about that, I also checked under the dash and sure enough it is Colorado Red. Note; the car is shown leaving the factory with a steering wheel lock which was required in Germany. The lock is missing but the column has an opening in it where it looks like one should have been. Does anyone have such an option on their car? I would like to see what one looks like installed in a car.
Many thanks to all.

Glad to help out. As to your question about the German Export steering column lock, you might try to contact Tony Bove. It appears he has one of the same cars:

Thanks John, I tried to send Tony an email but it failed. Great stories of MKII's, guess I'll have to include mine someday.

Oh well, it was worth a try. You could ask on the Healey list and chances are you could find the answer to your questions. I'm not currently subcribed but it is easy to sign up and then unsubscribe later if you find it generates too much email. Here's a link with signup info if you don't already know how to do it:

Hi John and Johnny,

Re "too much mail on the healey list" -
I still read the 'list" postings, but rather than get all that email (it used to be fun at first and I'd read every one of them, but after a couple of years dwindled down to the most pertinent or entertaining [like the recent Barrett Jackson thread]) - these days I store the website address for the archives in "my favorites," go there each day, click onto the current month, scroll down to the most recent at the bottom of the postings and starting at near the bottom from where I left off the previous visit, pick and choose from there. Just keep track of the last post (by topic, name or date) so you know how far back to backtrack the next day.

And of course, the BCF is my favorite!

Whatever you do, don't destroy that certificate! Paint your car any battleship grey you can find and put it up for auction at Barrett-Jackson as THE only Colorado Grey Healey ever produced. You'll be rich. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Happy Healeying,
Rick

The BJ8 registry has been able to accumulate copies of BMIHT certificates for 473 BJ8s. When you have that many of them together, you can easily see that errors occur on the certificates with a distressing frequency, especially considering the outrageous cost for the things. I have never heard of Colorado Grey, but I would bet anything short of my Healey keys that it's another mistake for Colorado Red, and grey trim. Just some sloppy transcribing of the records to the certificate.
