Cold Start Problems

Over here in Aus, Winter has well and truely begun, and the cold starts are becoming a real PAIN IN THE ###!!!!!

The B now is running better than it ever has, the tune is GREAT, doesnt blow smoke, now essentially all the internals are BRAND SPANKING NEW!

I'm just a bit stumped as to why its SOOO darn HARD to start.

CRANK CRANK CRANK CRANK CRANK...
It only seems to fireup when i stop cranking the starter... my mechanic says its a problem with the barrel of the ignition switch.

What u guys recon?

Try bypassing the ignition switch.
Run a jump wire from an always on power source.
Then try starting. If the same things happens, it is not the switch. If it starts, then the switch is the problem.

Oh, you will have to disconnect the wire to turn off the engine once it starts.

If the problem is only there when the car is cold, then I'm partial to the choke not functioning properly. Just a thought, does your car have automatic choke, or does it have manual choke?

If you have auto-choke, I believe you may have to press the pedal to the floor then take your foot off the pedal before starting. That's how the single ZS carbs are anyways (do twin SU carbs have auto-choke, and do they work the same way as the ZS?). For manual choke, I'd make sure the pull handle is actually enguaging the choke on the carbs.

Cheers mike.
Mite give it a whirl this arvo /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Nunyas... Ive got twin SU's in this, but theres nothing wrong with my choke and yeh SU's have manual choke

Yep EMGEBE, But like that fellow,Nunyas, said be sure that the choke is adjusted properly. If it isn't set up right you can crank on SU's and that bugger won't start for a long time. Try this to check the choke setting, instead of just pulling it out once, give it initially two pulls and see if it starts sooner. If it does the choke needs to be visited and given some additional attention.--FWIW /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif--Keoke
