Coil Spring Compressor

Any difference between the unit sold by Moss vs. TRF? TRF's unit is normally $77, but it's on sale now for $53. Moss's normal price is $65.

Anybody have either, or have a preference either way? Thanks in advance.

I would guess both TRF and Moss get their spring compressors from the same supplier. My vote would be for TRF since it's on sale. I assume it is the compressor that is fed up through the center of the spring (which I prefer) and not one that clamps on the side of the spring.

TRF is way different. It uses a 1/2" thick aluminum base that slips over the lower shock mounting studs. The Moss uses a stamped steel base.

Both use a threaded rod with acme threads, otherwise identical from what I've seen.

I just ordered the one from TRF. We'll see what it looks like when it gets here.

Here's a poor pic of the TRF one; this one has the TR3 plate and TR6 plate...

I'll play devil's advocate and mention that several people on here, myself included, have made our own from simple parts. Having said that, I will also add that the risks if the unit fails are large enough that you may want to stick with your current plan of buying one. I feel that if I proceed with caution with mine that I can maintain an acceptable level of safety.

I made my own too but I did order ACME threaded rod and nuts from McMaster. As noted before, Moss and TRF also use ACME threads due to their strength and construction. My plates are probably overkill at 1/4" thick. Total cost to make up two sets was about $15. Yes two sets.......36" of ACME rod only costs $15 and then you cut it in half.......It amazes me how much TRF and Moss charge for theirs. They probably get them for less then $10 each and mark them way up based on the safety/risk factor.

I'm too lazy to look the numbers up again, but the 3/4" common threaded rod that I used was WAY overkill, theoretically. It's also worked out fine in practice, been through a couple dozen compress/release cycles so far and no signs of distress, even using an impact wrench to turn it. (Well, I said I was lazy

I made mine using 5/16" or 3/8" allthread.

BobbyD has the template for making the plate on his website. Look near the middle of his TR6 homepage...I believe in the grey button area.

The store bought ones never worked for my mustang (Note thats a completely different style tool as ours came from oreilys) They kept falling off. It was very dangerous. So my husband made his own tool which DID NOT fall off like the othe ones kept doing.
