Coil replacement question

Hi Larry, try the Lucas Sport Coil. No external ballast used, give you a little more spark and you can open up your plug gap a bit. Works well with the Pertronix.

Does your coil have just a white wire feeding power to it (I think a 71/72 should)? If so then its does not require an external ballast.

If it has a couple of white/other color striped wires powering it then that would be a coil that is expecting an external ballast.

I use the Lucas Sport coil, as noted it requires no ballast. One advantage to the non-ballasted coil on the 6 is that it would be the same as your TR4. Thus one spare coil would work for both cars.

I keep my spares in cloth bags from Harbor Freight and just toss them in the boot of whichever TR I'm driving. I guess you could have 3 bags: '6', '4', 'Both'.

Larry,I have a sport coil available if you are interested.

Also have a Lucas sport coil.
here is the scoop on the Mallory if you want it

A Lucas DLB102 coil requires an external ballast resistor for operation on 12v; even when used with a Pertronix.

However, your 71 should not have the ballast built into the harness as the later TR6 do, so if you stay with the DLB102, you'll need to have a resistor.

Since you're going to replace it anyway, my suggestion would be a coil that doesn't require the external ballast, like a DLB101 (which I think would be original for your car).

Note that "Lucas Sports" coils come in both varieties, so if you go that way, be careful which one you get. ISTR DLB105 doesn't need an external ballast, while DLB110 does; but I could be mistaken about the numbers.
