Cocooning....the new Going Out.

More and more people that I know are choosing to stay at home and enjoy their <span style="font-weight: bold">cocoons</span>. Their home. Nothing wrong with getting yourself set up to enjoy the things you have, perhaps share with a few friends, cooking, cable, reading, hobbies...on and on. But going out and seeking the high life has gotten too expensive. I have friends that have made their abodes into virtual cocoons, with everything they need. Doesn't have to be lavish. Just comfortable. Staying in is the new going out.
 
Bill: I totally agree. We have a small clique, maybe 8 - 10 couples , ranging in age from 55 to 70, but the majority of us approaching retirement age. We have a common interest in classical music and watching good movies. In the past, when we were younger and the economy was booming, we would all meet in Phila. and attend the symphony or go together to a new movie. Then our priorities changed and the economy tanked. For the past three years we have been gathering maybe twice a month for either "concert" night or "movie" night. Most of us get Netflix movies and for concerts we have maybe 3500 CD's worth of classical music in total. By doing this we are having a great time and saving a lot of money. Considering that the cheapest concert tickets are maybe $40 each and movies are $10 + and arm and a leg for snacks this is how we have decided to entertain and enjoy each other's company. The host and hostess provide the gathering place and everyone else brings a beverage and/or snacks. Of course this idea can be applied to just about any interest.

Admittedly I am from the younger set...

But I get out lots these days, everything from open mic nights to the poetry slam nights, and the occasional concert, but most of the events I attend are inexpensive as they tend to be either local artists or more independent touring artists who don't charge an arm and a leg... Or perhaps I get to take the photos, in which case I get paid a small amount of money (or at least a free ticket) to be there

Having said that... I can understand why people do <span style="font-weight: bold">cocoon</span>

But I am generally concerned with how communication is being effected in the electronic age, how it's becoming too impersonal as some people never leave their house for anything, if nothing else getting out of the house gives a person some exercise...

I love getting out of the house for photostrolls, a good excuse to get some exercise and take some photos at the same time, photos like this fairly recent one...

My impertinent thoughts anyway, for what it's worth
 
That's why I'm doing my house over and that's where I'll stay. I've spent half of my adult life "out" at some kind of business, social, civic or entertainment event. As I get older, I'm just content to stay home and relax. I still travel a good bit in my job, so I'm not sequestered, but just tired of being out in the public every day/night. I've traveled enough of the world and I still have a quiet and warm vacation spot to visit, should I want to go.

Frank, you have the right idea. I gave up the theater, football and baseball games (except for the local PawSox farm club, $10 best seat in house 5 minutes away) and I'm keeping it within close friend range. Those events are so outrageous here in New England that you can buy a great plasma TV system and never have to wait for a crappy snack or to use a bathroom.
 
Th' hovel has been my 'base' for over a decade.

"Goin' Out" is a highly over-rated experience to my mind.

We've built our house to be our haven....why fight the crowds in movie thaters? Jerri cooks better than most restarants.....

I'm not Mardi Grasing either- LOL I hate to think I just can't deal with the the dangerous aspect it seems to become lately- P.S. The Carousel of Arts would LOVE for you to come!! I promise a good time & an audience that will love and admire your wonderful Triumph!!
 
Heck, if I lived anywhere near New Orleans you couldn't tear me away from Mardi Gras... I actually think at times that Calgary is the most boring place (culturally) to live, constantly a wee bit envious of a certain person over in Scotland who gets killer photos of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival... Simply one of the major festivals of the world with awesome sights... I could move elsewhere but...
