clutch Slave boiling

On a recent regularity rally I drove in very hot condition. after a while I had difficulty selecting reverse and later first gear. Pumping the clutch resolved the issue monetarily but is difficult when you are constantly changing gears, i.e. in town driving

Has anyone experienced a problem where there slave cylinder boiled, keeping in mind this is on a 5 speed box and the slave is n the exhaust side.

I hope bleeding the clutch and replacing the fluid solve my problem as I don't have any leakage in the system.

Thx

Welcome! and sorry to hear of this. I have never heard of the clutch fluid boiling. Are you sure there isn't a leak? or an air bubble? or corrosion in the slave? Mine is a 1500 but two years ago it took almost a season to sort out mine and involved basically replacing everything.

Last year I had a similar situation. Ultimately, it was the slave cylinder failing. I guess when the slave (and the seal within) became warm/hot it became soft enough to allow a faster leak-by.

I had a similar problem on a Bugeye I was restoring. Problem was that I had not installed an earth strap, so the earth was occurring through the clutch pipe to the master cylinder, so the slave and pipe were getting super hot, too hot to touch. Installed an earth strap and the problem was gone.

Hi all, thanks.
I finally got around to bleeding the clutch without luck, Thinking now that I might have warped clutch and by pumping the clutch I effectively just increase the stroke enough.

What fluid are you using?
Dot3 boils at a lower temp than Dot4 and Dot5 is even higher

I'm using dot 4.
More background on my problem, sometime ago I lost the clutch in the car . On removal I noticed that the gearbox's input shaft sleeve was broken(i.e. where the release bearing run on). I fixed that (BTW in South Africa you can get the sleeve/oil seal part for about $60) Also noticed that the spigot bearing came loose and there was damage to the clutch and pressure plate.

I changed to a new clutch and pressure plate. When I did the 5 speed conversion I changed to a bigger slave which gave me a much better feel on the clutch and I'm think now that potentially the problem could be that the new pressure plate ( after bedding in) needs a bit more travel than the old one to fully release. So before pulling the engine I'm considering changing to a slightly smaller slave and see if the extra travel solves the problem.
