Is there a difference in the clutch release bearing and carrier between a TR3A and a TR4A? Is the bearing interchangeable and same for the carrier? Also how far does the release bearing get pushed on to the carrier and what is the best way to do this?
Yes, both the bearing and the carrier are different; you need to use the ones that match your clutch (not the gearbox). There is a shoulder on both types of carrier that the bearing goes up against.
TRF sells a special tool that they claim was developed in conjunction with RHP (the folks who made the original bearing). P/N RFT121. But I've not tried it myself. Last time I did a TR3 bearing, I just used the bench vise as a press; and the TR4A-TR6 style bearing I used now was installed by Brian Schlorff at Power British (who sold me the bearing & carrier as a unit). The article at https://www.buckeyetriumphs.org/technical/clutch/ReleaseBearing/ReleaseBearingWoes.htm shows the tool and how to use it.
Anybody have a picture of the TR3 bearing installed on the carrier? Is the flange on the sleeve about 3/16th from the rear of the bearing?
I don'see any difference between the two bronze carriers...one from the TR3A and one from the 4A???
Some release bearings have a "rounded"face that contacts the pressure plate. Is this rounded release bearing for the TR3 "3 fingered" pressure plate and would the "flat" faced release bearing be for the TR4A/TR6 pressure plate?
