TR2/3/3A Clutch Qusetion Again

I'm planning on installing a TR4 overdrive gearbox into my 1960 TR3. The clutch that came out of the 1964 TR4 measures 8.5" across. The TR3 clutch measures about 9.25 inches. I was under the impression that an early TR4 clutch was the same as the TR3? Do I have a TR4A clutch that was replaced in the 64 model? I've ordered a TR3 early TR4 clutch kit. I'm assuming the overdrive transmission will bolt up okay other than slotting the mount. How about the throw out bearing? Will the TR3 work? The bearings both have the same ID but the one from my TR4 has a small lip. Another quick question, how do you remove the shift lever after taking out the long bolt and smaller bolt?

Yup, sounds like someone has installed a TR4A clutch. The mounting bolt locations are different, so you may have a TR4A flywheel as well.

The gearbox should bolt up, but you need the throwout bearing and carrier to match whichever clutch you use. Depending on how thick the gearbox mounting flange is, you may need longer mounting bolts and studs.

That steel cap (that retains the shift lever) can be a bear to get off, especially if the joint has corroded (from dissimilar metals). Try using a flat punch (drift) and BFH (big freaking hammer). Some folks have even had to cut the cap (but I don't know offhand of anyone selling new replacements).

I just received a TR3 clutch kit so I plan on using it with the TR4 box. Do I have to swap the carrier from the TR3 transmission to the TR4 just because of the the TO bearing? It looks to be a simple swap or am I not seeing something?

The TR3/A/B and TR4 use the same TOB & carrier. But, the TR4A bearing & carrier are different. You need to use the carrier & bearing that match the clutch. The swap is trivial though, just slide the old one off and the new one on (assuming the bearing is already on the carrier). Make sure it engages with the release fork, then use wire or tape to hold the external lever in place during installation.

Randall, I seem to have fallen into somewhat of a mess. The TOB on the left is the one that came from the TR3 transmission. The one on the right came from the TR4? overdrive setup. Finally the one pictured in the center is the one that came with my new clutch kit. Besides not having any place for the carrier to ride the Id is much too big. The clutch and pressure plate seem to be for a TR3 as they match the ones that came from my car. Any ideas?

Donnie,
Both carriers looks the same lenght to me. You have to press the carrier out of the TOB and the new one should press right back on it. New TOB OD is larger but shouldn't make any difference riding on the clutch.

The TOB in the center appears to have the curved face used with the 4A clutch. On the right looks like an original (type) TR3 TOB & carrier. I can't tell for sure about the one on the left.

ISTR the 4A carrier fits farther inside the bearing, but it's been a long time and I'm not certain.

I had mistaken the lever and prongs inside the transmission as what you guys were referring to as the carrier. I'm not sure how to press the carrier out of the old TO bearing and into the new? I'm still confused as the new bearing I received with my clutch kit has a much larger inside diameter and will not ride on the transmission input shaft collar. Does that make a difference.I'd hate to put it all together and then have to redo. The picture shows the left bearing which came from the TR3 transmission, the right bearing which came from the TR4 overdrive transmission with the small clutch and the center is a new one from my clutch kit.

Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology, the factory calls it the "bearing sleeve". Anyway, by "carrier", I mean the piece that presses into the throwout bearing, and then rides on the transmission nose (carrying the bearing).
ISTR I cut down a pipe cap to make a mandrel to press out the carrier from the old bearing. I think TRF sells a tool to install the bearing while rotating it, to (hopefully) avoid damage to the bearing; but I just pressed it in. The Buckeye article at https://www.buckeyetriumphs.org/technical/clutch/ReleaseBearing/ReleaseBearingWoes.htm shows the use of the tool.
