Clutch question

That is an intresting question. My Bugeye from 1974 had the same, never could quite figure out what it was all about.

But I agree of course, spring not required.
 
I had one that way too! When I removed it, I found out why. The T/O bearing had a tendency to drag a bit and wear out prematurely (wrong T/O as I recall!). POs solution was the spring to pull the fork back and reduce the drag! Lazy-mans easier-than-pulling-the-engine solution, I guess!!!
 
I've seen that done on MGB's too. On a B, the bush on the clutch fork can get work and rattle like heck. As Mike mentioned it can also cause premature wear on the TO bearing. Since you have to pull the transmission to fix it, often guys put a spring on it to add pressure and keep it quiet.
 
Thanks for the quick response Jeff. I am glad it wasn't needed, because as I was removing it, the spring broke. I have replaced the bushing, pivot and TO bearing so I should be in good shape. The worse part is that with the spring pulling the clutch arm too far back I thought there was air in the system since I could not get a good pedal. I spent about 4 hours trying to get non existent air out of the system. Then I realized what might be happening and knew this was the place to get my answer.
