MGB Clutch problem

Hey Ya'lll...I haven't been on here in quite some time. Haven't been driving the "B" much. Realized today that I have a problem...

Several months ago the trans wouldn't go into gears without grinding. Sometimes wouldn't go at all at a complete stop. I installed a new clutch slave cylinder and that seemed to fix the problem. Today I suddenly have the same problem and the master cylinder was low on fluid. I topped it off to no avail. Suggestions ?? Thanks.

Gary

ps: I have an old post somewhere on here from the last time this happened

Gary, is there any evidence of fluid on the drivers side floor or the pedal? If not, then p'raps the rubber seals in the master have given up.

Thanks Doc. No fluid there. I'll try to check out the master.

Gary, sometimes the seal in the master will let fluid bypass the seal. Pedal feels "OK" but nothing happens and no external leaks. Rebuilds are all right IF the bore is excellent otherwise a new MC is the hot set-up.

Bob...How do I go about checking this seal and seeing if fluid is bypassing? I still have a full master cylinder and no leaks anywhere but still the grinding problem.

Put the car in gear (while NOT running). Make sure there is nothing immediately near the car and then DEPRESS the clutch and operate the starter. If the car tries to move or start the clutch is not releasing. The pressure plate requires quite a bit of force to release and if that internal seal is failing you will not get enough oompah to push the slave cylinder.

You could have the exact same problem with fluid bypassing the slave cylinder seal but my experience points to the MC most of the time.

It is best to switch both units and the hose. Check the push rods and pins for wear and replace if needed.
good luck.

Make sure there is no air in the slave before tearing anything apart! PJ
