Clutch Pedal Position

Today I decided to get the BJ8 out of hibernation and check a couple of areas.
One major issue that seems to have appeared since last year is the height of the clutch pedal.
It’s always been at pretty much the same height as the other pedals, but now it sits a couple of inches higher so it’s difficult for me to get my foot onto the pedal to depress it.
I’ve had a look and all seems in order, but looks as if the master cylinder is pushing the rod out further than it used to. The clutch depresses and works OK, the spring returns the pedal after depressing to change gear, but it comes back a couple of inches too far.
Is there another spring I’m missing, or maybe it’s a problem with the cylinder?

My guess is the circlip that keeps the master cylinder piston from coming out of the housing has popped off of its ridge in the cylinder bore. It is just under the dust cover.
