Clutch Master Cylinder

A recent inspection of the Clutch Master Cylinder in my BJ-7 revealed some fluid weeping, and although minimal, it could be causing problems with shifting. I now have to shift slower to avoid graunching on upshifts.

What's the best approach: shall I replace the MC seals or buy a new unit? Any suggestions or hints on replacing the seals and would it OKay to use emory cloth to prep the Master Cylinder bore rather than honing? Oh, and one last question, what's the proper application of the red seal grease that comes with the kits? Could it be applied on the internal seals, or used only on the inside of the dust cover? GONZO!

Gonzo, generally the master cylinder can be rebuilt with the Kit if the bore is good. However, a preferred method seems to be to replace it with a new unit, then having the old one rebuilt professionally as a spare.NO /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif only controlled honing should be used to prep the Master Cylinder bore. The red grease is generally relegated to inside the dust cover since everthing else is lubed with brake fluid prior to reassembly.-FWIW---Keoke

If you can inspect the master cylinder first you can make and educated stab at which way to go. My slave cylinder failed badly, I re rubbered the slave and the master at the same time, did not sand, emery or hone and touch wood, 2 years later, AOK. My friendly Healey mechanic always replaces with new, but then he would, it is more trouble than it is worth for him to rebuild and then things posibly go wrong later.
