Just when I thouht I was done......more surprises!
I installed the radiator, filled it with antifreeze and fired up the engine. It sounded good, but had noisy valves. Then I noticed it dripping antifreeze out of the thermostat housing. Somehow the gasket got a tear in it, so installed a new one and was finished. That's when I noticed the antifreeze pouring out under the car. WTF?
Well, here's a funny story. The GX head on my Datsun engine has coolant passages that run to the intake manifold. My intake is a custom built job that does not have any coolant passages. The old gasket I scrapped off the head was hand made by the previous owner and it covered up these small passages in the head, so no leaks. I bought a real Datsun instake/exhaust manifold gasket and installed it. It does not (obviously) cover up these holes and with nowhere else to go, the antifreeze just pukedout around the manifold and onto the ground. Great. I spent an hour making a gasket like the previous owner did 15 years ago. Live & learn, I guess.
With that fixed, I concentrated on why the engine was noisy. I had adjusted the valves 4 times.....both hot & cold, but the valves still clicked noisily. Then it hit me. I had the head resurfaced when I got the valve job, so it is shorter than it was before which effectivley makes the pushrods longer (in relation to where they were prior to the resurfacing). When I re-installed the rocker arm assembly, I bolted it down without thinking. I then adjusted the valves and was done. Well, since some material was taken off the head, it closed up the clearances between the rockers & the valves quite a bit.....so much that when I bolted down the rocker assembly I bent a couple of pushrods.
I confirmed this by removing the pushrods and inspecting them on a pane of glass......at least one was wobbly (maybe two, but one was very noticeable).
Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!
To make matters worse, I got my new electric fan today and the guy sold me the wrong one.....it is entirely too big for my car. It was an eBay auction and he listed it as the model I wanted, but sent me something completely different.
Anyway, tomorrow I get new pushrods and I am installing the old fan for now just so I can drive the thing.....it's been almost a month since I drove my BE and I need my fix.
I should be done comepletely tomorrow afternoon. Woo hoo!
