Clutch Carnage, and a stupid question

While cleaning up my garage today, I decided to clean up my old transmission, since every time one walked by it, the grease monster would grab hold of your pants. Once I got all the gunk from inside the bellhousing, I noticed these deep gouges. It looks to me like at some point a clutch decided to commit suicide, or there was something rattling around in there.

The second picture is my stupid question. Are the two holes on the side of the gearbox designed to do anything except gather grease and dirt until they are full?

Heard they were for a 'side shifting mechanism'...

From some guy.

That was my understanding as well. "One case fits all."

Interesting. When I pull the trans apart (at some point) I will have to check out where those castings point to on the inside of the box.

I think I'm going to get some of those steel plugs that Home Depot sells and stick them in the holes of my new trans to keep crud from building up in there.

Thanks all.

When my Q-H clutch gave up, there were loose pieces from the driven disk that were broken and could have done damage like that.

Could have been the clutch disks hub springs,
I've got a 2.6L bell housing with similar scars...
