I think Michael Bay commissioned the asteroid flyby to coincide with the release of the next Transformers movie.
 
Study it?!..... heck, Sounds like the perfect time to try out the ability to blow one out of the sky in the event it was on a collision course.

I can think of lots others I'd prefer to send to divert it - or even just get out in front to film it. :devilgrin: (oh was that an inside word or an outside word?)
