So I decided to take the B on the weekly grocery run this morning with Justin, my 10 yr old. I parked out in no mans land, like I usually do.

As we're loading groceries into the trunk and the back shelf, some woman comes flying around the back of the car and nearly hits my son who is standing in the gap of the open passenger door.

I yell LOUDLY at her to stop. She rolls her window down and tells me that I'm not respecting elders and "it's just a car".

I proceed to show her that there's a young child loading groceries and she walks away muttering something under her breath.

Thanks lady; you nearly hit my kid and it's somehow my fault.

Some people just don't understand the idea that respect goes both ways. Even if it was "just a car", and not your son's safety in question doesn't give people the right to act irresponsibly. People don't seem to understand that parking lots are one of the most dangerous places to be, I lost track of how many accidents I saw while pushing carts working at a grocery store.

Too many people in too big a rush to be no where in particular. I have had three middle age women pull out in front of me from either a stop sign or driveway directly in front of me while on my motorcyle (twice) or in my pick up. When I politely asked them why they were violating what was clearly my right of way, they each responded,"well, you CAN stop so I can go." One flipped me off (and I really did not say anything!), one almost went ahead and hit me on my bike and the otgher said to wait and she will call her husband so he can kick my a**. All true, believe it or not. Living and working in LA is really trying my patience!

First, I want to say I am glad your son is ok. Always a scary thing when kids are involved.

It's a crazy world we live in, no doubt. I was crossing the street a couple of years ago. As I stepped off the curb, this car came rather rapidly, giving me just enough time to lean backwards before my toes got run over. I yelled at the driver "You just ran over my FOOT!" The response was "You weren't in the crosswalk - I didn't have to stop!" HUH???? So it's "OK" to run over a pedestrian when they're NOT in a crosswalk???!!!!

This thread reminds me also of a thread in The Pub posted by Aweman on 04/22/08 titled "Garbage Truck Rule". I cut and pasted this into a word document to print it. It is taped to bottom of my computer screen. The last line is especially fitting:

Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.

Link didn't work, Peter.

Just so you know, 9mm fits nicely under the rear section of a Ammco rubber matt in a MGB, and will even stay put even under track conditions. I belong to 4 clubs, Foothills British Car Club, AMGBR, SCCA and NRA, nuff said.

Noted.

I have no idea what I would have done if she'd have hit him, but it would not have been very polite. She stopped about a foot short of the door edge and two feet short of him (half of which was bent inside the back of the car).

Had the situation been reversed, I'd have been profusely appologetic and made sure the kid was Ok. I guess some people just don't care.

One would fit very nicely in a Bugeye door as well. Obviously this hag was thinking only of herself and couldn't accept she was way wrong in this situation. I agree, if I did something like her I would have been mortified and apologizing like crazy. Very happy your son wasn't injured as it was obviously a very close call. This woman's behavior must have made quite an impression on him too - what a loon.
It's people like this senior citizen that cause the states to tighten up license renewals for the older set.

Glad your son was unhurt!

As for the inconsiderate maroon, sadly typical. She may have come back to find TWO flat tires if it'd been me. Not that I'd advocate property damage...

...just happen to have a Schrader valve tool in the glovebox...

I've had similar confrontations. There's no "winning" in the situation, some folks just ATTACK rather than admit screwups. I figure I can hope for a draw.

Oooh... I like that. I like that alot.

On the bright side, we had a good chat on the way home about the world and inconsiderate people. I explained that maybe she just had a bad day and that all three of us (son, dad, MG) emerged unscathed.

I knew you racers were competitive, but jeez....have you ever used it to gain a position on the track

Doc beat me to it.

I too hold a similar idea of automotive "frontier justice".

Four flats tend to get people's attention.

I know someone that does the same thing. His best was against a frat boy in a Jeep with tons of smart a$$ attitude. All four of his tires on the ground, plus his outboar spare tire. Pulled the valves and walked away with all five in his pocket.

A 9mm does fit inside a Bugeye door. Don't ask.

.45 is always better!
