clearances and gaps

I'm going to the British car show in Merrimack, NH on Saturday. I told my brother who's restoring the car over the winter and he asked me to take pix and measurements on door gaps, trunk gaps etc. He can't make the show but he usually uses a compass so as to avoid touching exterior paint and advised me to do the same. Does anybody have the proper gap measurements? He says that when he's done I'll have a nice driver, but he's pretty finicky so I think he's looking to get it as close to factory as possible. I'll take measurements at the show, but it would also be good to se what's out there.

Factory equals whatever fit at the time! One door might have wider gaps than the other - one side of the trunk wider than the other...nobody really kept close quality control on them.

What about Rick's 65B or Bret's or Stewart's what are your gaps at doors etc? Are they the same?
I wouldn't dare be a purist, they seem annoying, but there must be bragging rights amongst them as to the best gaps.

I'm wiping the tears from me eyes. "Standards"?!?! Gap measurements?!?! What a hoot! Pressed Steel literally THREW them together. The cars we're driving around after rebuilds are ever so much better fit-n-finish than any "showroom" car ever was. If it fit in the hole, it got bolted down. The dealerships would sometimes adjust the really glaring misalignments. Your bro will likely exceed any factory fitted panels and portals he fits.

"More'n one popcicle stick, less than two." That's yer gap measurement.

I would suspect that the best shut line measurement to use is the one that places the door in the middle of the opening. WHICH, as others have already mentioned, is already better than what came from the factory. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

YIKES!!!!!!! Well his job just a lot easier and the quality of his work has skyrocketed. Actually he has a cover of Hot Rod Magazine to his credit (he's published, as he likes to say) and he's one of my kid brothers so I gotta brag on him. But he's always worked on 30's and 40"s chevy and fords, this is only cause he knows me. I'll let you know what the "purists" at tomorrows show say when I ask the same question.
