MGB Clear or tinted, that is the question.

I recently watched a Moss video about original windshield tooling and making new ones very similar to the "old" ones. I believe they call it Triplex. So is the preference of MGB Roadster owners CLEAR or TINTED? I'd love to hear your thought.

I have never heard of or seen tinted. Not sure I really see the point in a rag top.

If your looking for originality buy using a Triplex, then go with clear, to my knowledge they never came originally as tinted. PJ

I'm pretty sure later MGBs were available with tinted windshields, but I'm not sure about the earlier cars. It's not really much of a tint...and doesn't have the dark tint across the top like you see on the older US cars. I think it was mainly offered for marketing purposes since other cars touted that as an option. It probably helps a little with the glare off all the chrome of the other cars around you. Of course, that's not much of a problem these days...

When we got the B it had a replacement windscreen in it, one of the aftermarket ones with the "wavy" glass that were flooding the market in the early and mid eighties. Replaced it with one from a now-defunct supplier just before they closed their doors. A slight tint and no wave.

Must have been one of those lovely South African screens?

Yup! Had a horizontal section across the thing, a bit thicker than the rest, it magnified the view. Disorienting!

That was a feature designed to give you a better view of the traffic ahead of you! :D

Thanks for the replies. I didn't want to affect any posts but now I can say I went with CLEAR and not tinted. Yea, glare might be reduced but a top-down convertible and really cool sunglasses is all you need!!

exactly!

You did the correct things as far as originality is concerned :encouragement: I was incorrect in my earlier post. I just checked Clausager's book and could find no mention of tinted glass being either standard or optional on the roadster. It became standard on North American GTs at the beginning of the 1971 model year, and was optional on all other GTs later in that year....but I couldn't find any mention of it being an option on the roadster.

That's what I get for depending on my memory at my age!
