Cleaning wire wheel splines

Seems the body shop was taking my wire wheels off and on and also got overspray on the tires and spokes. Nice.

I spent two hours trying to clean one wheel. Any tips on removing paint from the tires, spokes and rims?

I would like to remove all the grease from the hub spline and wheel. I'm sure theres bead blast and bondo dust in it. What should I use?

What should I use to regrease it? I have one 2oz tube of Copaslip Anti-sieze Compound. Is that enough for all four wheels and hubs? This product good or something else at local store? How much will I need? Thin layer on both? Put it on with my finger?

Thank you, Roger

I have found non-chlorinated brake cleaner to be very effective at removing paint. Paper towels, tooth brush, lot of time.

Two oz. of Copaslip should be enough to do the four wheels, the seats, door knobs, the whole house.

I prefer something less messy such as white Lithium grease. Just a small amount on the hub splines, the place where inside of the wheel hub seats & the spinner threads. A tiny bit on the outside taper of the wheel where the spinner seats.

Most important of all, get everything clean if there is any chance of blasting grit contamination.

Hi Roger, Removing paint from tires and the spokes may be done using acetone and a course rag like a face cloth.

Cleaning the the hubs and the wheel centers can be done using Gasoline,Brake cleaner or carb cleaner with a stiff brush.

Copa slip is the best material you can get to stop wheels from freezing on the hub and preventing spline wear, plus it will not run onto the spokes and when used in the spinners will stop wear on the wheel hub. Please note; get a small brush like the welders use when they lead to put the CopaSlip in the wheel and on the hub.Wash hands good after use. That should keep you busy for a while.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For those tough cleaning jobs, face cloths work great. I fine them in packs of a dozen or so on sale. Also get the face towels for around the house stuff.
