Cleaning up 3M adhesive spray?

I've been doing some interior work and got a small smear of 3M adhesive spray on a painted surface of my car. I wiped it off immediately, but it left some residue. Can the collective wisdom recommend a way of cleaning off some dried 3M adhesive spray from a painted surface please? Rubbing alcohol, perhaps?

Thanks as always! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I use 3M adhesive/tar remover. Comes in a small square black can. Works great for all goo removal. Works much better than anything else - many people use WD40 too but it's not nearly as good as the 3M stuff.

Detailers clay is good...

Olive oil, That's right good old fashioned kitchen olive oil, doesn't even need to be the extra virgin kind.

We used to get a lot of inspection sticker replacments that leave adhesive(here in Hawaii, they put on a new pair of stickers annually). Found the cheapest way is to soak a rag with olive oil, wipe it over the adhesive. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, come back and wipe it away.

I use the Denatured alcohol cause it doesn't bother the paint.

... neither does the 3M remover. Really good stuff. I always follow with soapy water and a little carnauba.

I have used a piece of duct tape to lift this stuff off.

It won't lift good paint but use your own judgement and test in an inconspicuous area (as you will with whatever you do).

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate it. I may even try the olive oil just for fun.

Does the surface you got the 3M on have a clear coat finish on it? If so, I will tell you an old body shop trick. Just take a clean rag and gasoline, and it will be like new! But if the paint has NO finish do not do this as it will remove the paint as well.

There is also a product called "goof off" at most parts stores that supposedly removes latex and adhesives.

The mainstay "remover" for me has always been mineral spirits. As stated above: test a small inconspicuous spot first. Follow with soap 'n water.

I'm surprised nobody has said WD-40. I don't know that it will work, but it frees up things stuck with super glue. I think its mostly kerosene.

3M sells a remover for their contact cement. comes in a spray and is orange based. works great on all kinds of stuff. Hard to find though.

How cool is THAT?!? They make the stuff that gets all over everything, AND the stuff to remove it!

Two sales in ONE!

Note to self: BUY 3M stock. Their Marketing Department is outSTANDING. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif
