Cleaning out a threaded hole

I have found a good machine shop that will clean and magnaflux various parts of my "free TR3 engine". The only dilemma I can forsee (well, one of many, many I am sure) is how to clean out the bottom of the long, recessed head bolt holes that go way down into the block. I have accumulated a bunch of taps and will use a bottoming tap to clean out a blind hole, but I am sure that they don't make them this long and if they did I probably wouldn't want to pay for it. Any way to make the old head bolt into a bottoming tap, maybe by cutting grooves vertically?

Bill, why not have the machine shop tap and clean them for you? They probably have exactly what is needed and will do it correctly, I'm sure.

Paul,
You are probably right. I have just heard that sometimes this doesn't always happen. Just ask, right?

How deep are those holes?? I did a quick check at Mcmaster-Carr, and they had extension taps that were six inches long for about $15-$16 in 7/16" sizes. I don't recall whether the head studs are 7/16" or 1/2", but you get the idea. They run a little less then twice the price of a conventional length tap. Are you sure they go down that deep?? See how deep you have to go, what size and pitch you need, and see what Mcmaster has. They give you all the pertinent length data etc. on their website. As a matter of fact, their website is so good and easy to use, I don't use their catalog anymore at work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I'll check all that. Right now I have to get the pork roast off the barbeque before my wife throws a fit.

Here we go. Is it going to be the Triumph forum or cooking for the wife again??? Sometimes I think that you spoil her way too much!
