Cleaning carburator air filters

Is there an easy way to clean carburator air filters from the SU carbs of an AH 3000 BJ8. Is there a way of removing the mesh from the metal enclosure? Or is it permissible to simply rinse them in a bucket of petrol or kerosene and then let them air dry?

I've a re-print of the driver's Handbook for a BJ8.

It recommends that the cleaners be removed washed in parafin (AKA kerosene), drained, immersed in engine oil (presumably clean) then drained and re-fit.

Every 3000 miles or 3 months.

Hi Peteatgr, I have had very little success using the slosh around method initially on the filters. The method I use is to: 1} degrease them with agood degreaser and 2} clean them using SS Wheel cleaner that contains Phosphoric acid they will look like new and then can be reoiled.---Fwiw---Keoke
