It's 1959, and the B-36 "City of Fort Worth" is about to fly from Biggs AFB to Carswell AFB. Prior to the flight, airmen lined up on the wings, about to receive their "1000 Hour Club" pins. A new meaning to the term "ground support".

Now THAT is an *airplane* - plus a few nice cars on the tarmac to bring back memories.

Cool picture. I think I see Slim Pickins.... he's the 20th from the right. Yeeee Hawwwwww!.
(see who gets my obscure movie refrence)

Too bad he flew the B-52, not the B-36.

Six turning and four burning.

Brown shoes!!!

feh. Hardly "obscure".

..let's see who paps up with regard to MY reference.

Which of those cars is most likely to still be around?? My guess would, of course be the '57 Chevy coupe. There's another '57 in the pic, but it's the wagon. That probably went to the crusher.

Edit: I'll take a stab at the cars that are there that I can see...left to right.

'57 Chevy wagon
'54 Buick
'57 Chevy
'56 Mercury
'59 Buick
'56 Dodge

Back during those times, every car changed every year, and every kid knew the differences.

About now a Nomad with a six-banger and a three speed sounds GOOD.

Th' 36's didn't seem to last too long. We didn't get our money's worth. 52's onna other hand, WOW!

I spent part of my childhood growing up near McGuire AFB.

Haven't heard that one in years! Great reference!

I know, but it is close enough visually that it made me think of that movie.
Now, Doc's got me with the "brown shoes" refrence.

My buddy with the hot rod shop has a 57 nomad tucked into the corner. It's his "one day" project. He's had it for years, and dosen't plan to let it go, unless someone offered him "stupid money"

You've got me with a movie referrence, Doc. I keep getting hung up with memories of Zappa and the Mothers when I hear "brown shoes"!!!

Hey, it's a male version of Babes on Wings!

Well ... in my neck o' the woods ... aviators wear brown shoes, and navigators wear black ones.

If you look closely during "Doctor Strangelove", in the scenes where the 52 is doing the low level cross country flight, you will see the shadow of the aircraft as it flies over. Sharp eyes will note that the shadow belongs to a B17, not a B52. Legand has it that it is the B17 from New York, restored as Fuddy Duddy.

Very cool link for me. The Fuddy Duddy used to belong to the Genesseo air museum, which then moved to Big Flats and became the National Warplane Museum. During that time the Fuddy Duddy was a regular sight in the skies above my town as I live about 5 miles from the airport that the museum is at.
Sadly the museum fell on lean times, and wound up selling the B17 to help keep things going. I haven't seen the plane since. Although last year we got a visit from "Aluminum Overcast" another B17 from the midwest.
I've been inside about 4 different B17s in my life. I never miss a chance for a ground tour.
I miss the distinct sound of those 4 engines droning overhead. I would always run out to see it go over.

Ben - four engines droning ... Wright R-1820-97 "Cyclone" turbosupercharged radial engines, 1200 hp each.

yea.....they make beautiful music. You can almost make out individual pistons firing, but then they all blend togeather and it just sings. I love to be nearby when they start them up. that is soooo cool.
