TR2/3/3A Classic Gold TR2-4 water pump

Moss sells classic gold water pumps for the TR2-TR4,with a standard version and a heavy duty 6-vane version. I am a bit skeptical on the quality of repro water pumps in general, and classic gold in particular. Any suggestions, or does someone have a NOS QH water pump they would part with for fair money?

Don't buy either pump from moss. You get a piece of crap. Find a junk used pump and have the flying dutchman rebuild it. I find the 6 vane option to actually move too much water, the stock impeller is good.

Flying Dutchman? I'm guessing that is a member on here? Also, how hard is it to rebuild one of these? Is it just the bearing that needs replaced? I have mine off right now while the resto is going on so it's the right time to do this kind of stuff.

FWIW I picked up a reproduction original pump from TRF a few years back after the shaft broke on my original. Fits and works fine. I haven't kept track, but I've probably got 20K miles on it.

However, you need to be certain that the pulley is a tight fit on the shaft. If it will move easily with the nut removed, the fit is too loose and will eventually fail. (I had to replace the pulley too, the TRF replacement was a good fit. Don't forget the captive bolt, unless you've upgraded with a mounting stud.)

When we discussed rebuilding a few years back, it turned out that the original bearings were a funny size that was obsolete even when the cars were new. No one could find a current source. Has someone come up with a source of bearings that fit? Or is it still required to machine the housing and replace the shaft to use modern bearings?

I just go with the original pumps and rebuild them as needed. They come up often and cheap on eBay.

D'oh - I was thinking Fuel Pump -- although I have one water pump that is original and great, the TR3A got a nice replacement from a fellow in Idaho. My spare is a NOS pump that I carry for good luck.
