Well, I for one am sad to see Circuit City go, first and foremost for the 34,000 or so people that are losing their jobs.

Contrary to what most people have posted, I've always gotten good service at my local Circuit City. On the past 4 years, I bought a big screen, desktop, and laptop computer there. About 3 years ago, I showed up there about 8:00AM on BF morning, and of course the All in 1 printer I wanted was gone. Found a clerk and asked if he'd check in the back. He went back and brought me the last one in the store!

The scary part if you like "toys" like I do, is that this leaves no large nationwide competitor for Best Buy. I bet their board of directors is plotting right now how they're going to jack prices up. Sure, there's some competition for them in certain product lines with Walmart, and the office stores, but nobody else has the same or as extensive product lines.
 
Best Buy just dropped the price of the camera my daughter wants by $100 and she just ordered one from Henry's for the old price which they matched. Now we are in a quandry and check with henry's if they will price match Best Buy.

You never see it at the sale, other than the marked up marked down pseudo-bargains. Is it pre-sold to other retailers?

The good stuff usually disappears during the early days of the liquidation sale, when everything is 20% off or whatever and people rush in to get the "deals". Bear in mind, they don't replenish stock on the most sought after items so if you go in and try and get them at a bigger discount, they likely won't have it. Maybe a floor model, but that's it.

I never go into these things with a specific item in mind, because I seldom find it. But I have found stuff I was after, in a minor way, at a great price.

I did go to COMP USA when they were closing down. Not many deals on the big ticket items, but they had USB drives in a bin for $1. I bought 40 of them to give to my students to save and turn in research papers etc. I guess I need to see what "other things" Circuit city might have....good idea. Thanks
 
I stopped in Monday just to look around. Most midlevel and lower electronics were already thin on the shelves, big stuff didn't seem to be moving. I was also figuring on checking out DVDs, USB stuff, blank CDs/DVDs and so on in a week or 2.
 
I also went in to see if they had an electric antenna. Was surprised to see only a 10% discount.
You can get better deals online.
No antenna too.
 
Read an article in the WSJ today that said Circuit City turns the sale over to a liquidator company who then discounts only 10 - 20 percent off of LIST for the first few weeks of the sale. Only when the inventory starts to dwindle do the prices come down to the "bargin" level. As usual, Buyer Beware.
