One of my favorite flyers! As a flyer, his accomplishments were overwhelming! Quite a guy. :encouragement: PJ

I was saddened to hear it.

It's a shame he wasn't chosen as one of the "7" for the Mercury program. He was quite a guy.

One of my heroes!
Now, literally slipping the surly bonds of earth!
RIP

He was a great pilot who pushed the limits of flying knowledge.

I gather his sound breaking flight was done with cracked ribs. Or was that a myth?

I have his autobiography somewhere around here. Need to pull it out and read it again. I remember that he and his buddies in flight school did stuff that would get you a court martial these days.

We may have been better served by him staying where he was. A pilot vs. being a passenger.

He did break the sound barrier with two cracked ribs caused by a fall from a horse the day before. Had trouble closing the cockpit according to the NY Times.

Too bad we all were not born with his stones. Tuff mother, enjoy your last flight hero to us all.

A horse or mechanical bull? I think he had smuggled a short stick on board so he could get the latch closed.

ISTR it was Alan Shepard who referred to the Seven as "Spam in a Can".

I was given to understand it was a piece of a mop handle.

Here's a good question my wife asked, WHERE'S THE BROOM HANDLE NOW ?!?!

You would think SOMEONE would have saved the fastest broom handle on earth! :highly_amused:
