Ladies and Gents...

I am now ready to buy Chrome Spokes for my '58 Healey...

Where do you recommend that I buy them... I am leaning heavily toward 60 spoke wheels rather than the original 48s...

Thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Me thinks you are leaning in the right direction Ronzet, go with the stronger 60 spoke wheels and British wire wheel is close by?.---Fwiw--Keoke

And another option is Hendrix click here. I got a good deal from them on 60 spoke wires and radials, UPS right to my front door, balanced ready-to-go /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

yes, based on what I have been told, the 60 spoke wheels will not fit properly to the 58 Healey (100-6) drum brake wheels. I believe the 72 spoke wheels will...the 60 spoke wheels look more original, but since you are going for chrome (bling) maybe this is not an issue.

Hendrix Wire Wheels in North Carolina sold me 4 60 spoke wheels and tires, balanced and shaved for my 58 100-6. No problem with the front wheels rubbing. One of their people drives a Longbridge 100-6, and they are aware of the front wheel rubbing issue. Call and talk to them.

Why Longbridge 100-6, were they made in two places?

Oh my, now you can expect to get "the history" from a certain Longbridge 100-Six enthusiast! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

But to cut right to the chase, yes, there were BN4 series cars made in Longbridge and Abingdon. BMC transferred production from Longbridge to Abingdon in late 1957 while the BN4 was in production. Thus, there are "Longbridge BN4s" and "Abingdon BN4s." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Thanks for your comments and suggestions...

My BN4 is number 4008* of the "batch 1" Abingdon built cars with HD6s on a six port intake and drum brakes all around.

I like the classic look of the 48 spoke wheels and the 60 spoke looks close enough to still have that style. The 72 spoke is a bit too busy for my taste in the style.

I will take your advice to make sure that the front wheels actually fit before I buy them...

*The first serial number batch 1 Abingdon was 50759. Mine is 54767, built in January of 1958...

Correct; the original (OEM Healey) 60 spoke wheels contact the front drums (but not the rear) and the 72 spokes (as fitted to TR-6s, not sure about the MGC variety) will fit with no conflict.

One more note... For my fellow anal retentives, I got this link from a fine gentleman on the Forum and would give his name but have, unfortunately, misplaced it...

Production Article

This is a great article with a wealth of information about the production of the big Healeys.... Enough to satisfy even the most anal retentive of us... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Now, if I could just find a similar link for information on my little ol' '57 MGA...

No, I'm not going to make you listen (or read) a long dissertation on the differences of a Longbridge built BN4, however they, too, have the issue with the 60 spoke wheels up front. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the folks at Hendrix have a pretty good grip on the issue, and are a pleasure to deal with.

Longbridgehealey,

I checked the website for Hendrix and will contact them to discuss the clearance issue and, if they assure my that they are aware of the issue, purchase my wheels..

Thanks for the advice... Would have been a shame to get the wheels and be disappointed that they didn't fit!!!

Hmm, why go with chrome? If you're trying to retain the classic look, painted 48 looks great. In fact, if you like the chrome wheels why not go with the 48 spoke chrome wheels. Here's a picture of a fellow enthusiast with chrome 48 spoke wheels on a BN2. Just click on attachment above.

48 spoke chrome wires look nice, but I'd be damned if I'd drive on them (maybe on/off a trailer). They added more spokes to the wheels for a reason: strength. With the higher coefficient of friction of today's tires (and the way I like to take corners) using 48 spoke wires on the street is a recipe for disaster.

This is just my opinion, yours may vary /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Ronzet:

Just give BWW a jingle and ask them if they offer the 60s for your car (about 95% sure they do because it is just a function of lacing). They are a LOT closer to you!!!
