Chrome or not

Hi Guys,

I have just finished replating all the zinc fasteners and other small parts which cost only NZ$90 and made me wonder why anyone would bother with those home-plating kits available.

Anyway, now I'm moving on to the chromework and have found a few oddities that I need some experienced advice on.

1- Should the bonnet prop rod be chromed on a 57 BN4? If not, what colour?

2- is the bracket around the generator that holds the coil supposed to be chrome? I'd guess it should be engine green.

3- Should the landing plate, latching plate, pullrod, bellcrank and fasteners of the bonnet catch be chromed?

4- I have one zinc and one chrome safety catch on my bonnet, what finish should they have?

Cheers,
Andy.

NO to all three Paint them black except the landing plate it stays natural.--Fwiw--Keoke

Perfect, thanks guys.

Off to the de-chroming bath it is for these parts then.

Andy.

I blew it up 400% and it does not show the body #---Keoke

Yes it is there but I don't think it is the body number. I'll go out and have a look

oh yea, it is the body #. looks like it went for a swim in the zinc

Hi Randy, the plate was installed to the body and thus was painted at the same time as the body. The accompanying parts were added later and were left either in zinc plating or left black. The generator steady plate was attached to the generator and thus was painted along with the engine, however the coil bracket was installed with the coil and was usually left zinc plated, as were the bolts, washers, nuts etc.

The prop rod fasteners were also mounted before painting so should be body color. That's why the screw heads are always painted. The prop rod and associated hardware were added later so would not have been painted. They usually came in black. The bonnet attaching hardware should be left plated.

Andy - That is great to know. So now is the body # also located on the underside of the cockpit mouldings
thanks - jim :driving:

Hi Jim,

Just pulled them out from under a pile of stuff and yes, they are all stamped at one end. Interestingly I saw the name of a PO who had the car from 1974 to 1990 scratched into the inside of the cockpit mouldings so I'm guessing she had them re-anodised at some time.

Andy - Great!!! find. so now take a look at the hood and trunk hinges. You should also find body # located on each one. Also do you happen to have the original gravel shield? they say that the body # is on that as well, but I have never seen that on the Longbridge BN4.
Best of luck

Hi Jim,

No further markings that I can find on the hinges and I have no reason to believe they aren't the originals. Never seen a gravel shield...

Andy.
