Chrome front bumper mounting hole problem

Bought a new set of bumpers from Moss for the 72. The back bumper fits perfect. Different story for the front bumper!!! The spacing between the inter mounting holes in the original bumper is exactly 27 inches center to center. The new bumper from Moss is 26 & 1/2 inches. Naturally the brackets won't fit over the frame. 1/2 inch to narrow! Called Moss and they checked what they have in stock and the holes are 26 & 1/2 inches.I know my old bumper is the factory original. Has anybody had this problem replacing a front bumper? I didn't call VB yet to see if thier bumpers are 26 & 1/2 inches or 27./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif PJ

Another saga of "Parts from Beyond the Pacific." If you've got the original bumper and it's not "pretzel'd" you might consider rechroming it instead. The only other "fix" is to hog out the brackets behind to accomodate the "new" one. Or see if Tony may have a front one you could rechrome.

I thought of that too Doc. Elongating the holes in the brackets more. It will probably be a lot faster than any other way. The only problem with that is the brackets are spring steel. Very hard on cutters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif PJ

A Dremel and a "ceramic cutting" bit are up to the task, or a die grinder with a carbide cutter work well... I did it just last week to this ol' lump I'm retiring on.

Did you get one of Moss' "new" bumpers or one of their "old" bumpers? Ask them that question as they recently went to an entirely different bumper.

I dunno whether to be relieved or askeert at that news, Tony.

Moss went with a new vendor who's bumper replicates the original a little better...I just got one it & they're real close...

Tony, I called Moss and the guy had a bumper sent up from the warehouse for him to check the spacing between the holes and he told me that the holes on that bumper were 26 1/2 inches apart. Now I don't know if it was one of the new venders bumpers or not, as it was never mentioned that there had been a manufacture change. I know you handle Moss parts and are more knowledgeable about what goes on behind the scenes than most of us but do you think that they have the older numbered bumpers mixed in with the new ones at the warehouse? I solved my problem though by elongating the bracket holes to gain that 1/2 inch. I didn't want to do it but it worked! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif PJ

Don't know, I'll call them.
