Chrome Bumper Bolts Question.

The bumper bolts on my TF are too short. I can only get half a nut on them without washers. With the bumper, packing washer, cross bar and brackets, the bolts are at least a half inch short. Moss part numbers call for the same bolts for the A, B and T series bumpers. I don't know if the bolts that came with the car are for another make or not. Anyone have the length of the Moss bolts? Supposedly their all the same for MGs. PJ

I've come across varying lengths of those "carrage" type bumper bolts on LBC's.

And I thought the exposed heads on the TF bumpers were a larger diameter than the A and B series cars... but my memory is decidedly not as good as 't once was.

Doc, Maybe the original factory bolts were different. That wouldn't be any surprise. I measured the bolts on the car and it appears that the bolts on the front bumper are fairly new, where the ones on the back bumper are much older. The back bolts are 7/8s of an inch long, the newer ones on the front are 1 inch long and have finer threads, 24 per inch, old ones 20. I've read somewhere they should be 1&1/8 inches. Don't know what the Moss bolts are, but their all the same part number for all MGs. Trial and error I guess.

Moss may be sourcing a generic, "one size fits all".

I'd be for carting one of the old ones to a local fastener house to see if they could find an equivalent head/shank diameter & thread pitch in a longer version, then have 'em chromed.

Your probably right Doc. I can get longer bolts in stainless and then polish them, but the heads are not as domed as the originals. We have a great source for bolts here, but then again, their not like the originals. I'm going to order the Moss bolts and hope they'll be long enough. Worth a try. PJ
