Choosing Seat belts

I learned a lot about retractable seat belts this week.

1. When they jamb, do not take the side apart that contains the spring. That 2" diameter spring is about 8 feet long when freed from the housing.

2. So I bought a new set of retractable seat belts. They work and look great in my Mazda. My Mazda truck's seat belts were starting to look pretty crappy anyway.

But that's not the vehicle I needed them for.

Seems that most retractable seat belts will work only when they are mounted in a vertical position close to the floor- as I figured out today, that's so in case the car rolls over or onto its side, the seat belt will lock (I tried it with the seat belt, not the car) The belts will only reel out of the housing in a vertical position.

However in the Midget the seat belts are behind the seat up high. They need to come out of the housing in a horizontal position. I tried every which way of mounting them and couldn't get the belts to work correctly.

Anybody know where I can get a set of retractable belts that will work this way? Seems OEM MG belts are unavailable although the ones in the Moss catalog look the same as the ones I bought.

Years ago I bought some securon seatbelts from Victoria British (or maybe it was Moss). They work well and have held up well, but I hate the way they look.

No, these are the ones I got:

Why?

Actually what I am seeing is the mounting point is wrong. I can make the belts work if the belt is mounted to a wall behind the seats. The only way I can get these to work is directly vertical and pulling the belt away from the housing. They wont work if you mount them in the original location (sideways on the wheel well).

The securon belt reels are bulky and the covers are ill fitting. But... like I said... they have otherwise been flawless. THey lock upon rapid deceleration and on fast corners or when you quickly try to reach down and open the air vent flaps before the light turns green.

Get the old time ones, roll em up and tuck em behind the seat, forget em.

I've been thinking I'll just get a lap belt for the drivers side.

My passenger side still works OK.

I remember somewhere reading that the belts from the VW Golf???? would work. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Yep, those are the ones from VB. I think I mounted mine without the $50 angle bracket. Like I said, they work great, but I won't buy another pair.

Given the choice, if I could find an OEM substitue for seat belts, I would go that route before aftermarket. However, those ones I got on ebay that didn't work out in the MG do look like decent pieces when I put them in my Mazda Redneck truck.

I ordered the ones from VB as I needed a few thing also that I discovered while I am going through my brakes and front end.
