Choke Handle Question

Pulled the choke handle this afternoon and for the first time since I've owned the car it was extremely easy to pull.
So easy that I was left with the black knob and about 3" of metal rod.

Before I go ripping this thing out, would I be correct to assume that the stupid thing is probably broken and that I should order a new choke cable or is this something that's reconnectable ( i.e. with a screw )?
 
It should be easy enough to check at the carb and see if its just disconnected but I would just go ahead and assume its broken. They are not very expensive. Good Luck.
 
Cable is swaged into the metal rod as I remember.

Correct! And good luck accessing the nut that holds it to the back of the dash :smile: I had to take out the tach, the speedo and a couple of other gauges and switches before I could get my hand up there with a crow-foot wrench.

Unless the cable has got a kink in it, I think it's probably OK ... with mine I pulled the cable out of the sheath, oiled both in silione oil for a while, and then re-inserted it. Now it goes in and out as smooth as butter :smile:

One problem I had was that the carb end was a little bit frayed. I snipped it cleanly and soldered the end, and then sanded down so that it was smooth enough to be fed through the sheath.
 
Hmmm,
looks like i am one or two good pulls on the choke away from being in this same boat. Hard to pull, frayed ends. Now I have something to do this weekend!

hmmm... I've always had a bit of resistance on my choke handle (after market conversion on a ZS in my case). Recently, I've had the choke pull distance cut in half. Seems odd that mine did that, but it appears to still function properly.

If the cable is still attached to the knob assembly, it probably just came loose from the carbs. If the wire is not attached, you need a new one.

I wish it had been the carb end. That end I know. Of course, if it had been I wouldn't have posted the question and we wouldn't have had this nice ( seriously ) thread.

The advantage of living in Mechanicsville, IA is that it ain't that far from Lenexa, KS. VB shipments get here in no time!

Oh! To whoever mentioned that choke cables are cheap: I keep telling her that the parts or cheap, but after the water control valve, she started kicking me out in the yard every time I say the word "cheap". I'm currently constructing a supersized, climate controlled dog house in the back yard for those winter nights when it drops below 0 F /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
 
hehee... You'll need another dog, then.

And speakin' of choke cables... I didn't like the non-original plastic replacement knob with the outsized "C" screen printed on it sooo... I had an OE knob and cable end (the hex bit with the spring detent for the knob) and just last week set about gooberin' up a "modern" cable to accomodate the "old" knob end: HACKSAW'd that obnoxious plastic bit off, threaded the nub to #8-32, drilled out the hex end and tapped it... now we have an OE "looking" choke pull, functional and infinitely renewable!!
