Getting ready to order new engine mounts and new transmission mounts for my 77 B. One engine mount is obviously bad so I'll just replace both and I figured I might as well change the transmission mounts while my hands are dirty. I was wondering if I could take the mounts loose then jack the engine up a little and change them out. Is this going to be a PITA job or can I change these out without to much trouble?
 
Yes...That's how I've done it.

If you have a LOT of patience, you can remove/install the driver's side mount without removing the steering rack. Open end wrench turned one flat at a time until you can spin the mount off.

I also had washers bent at a 90* angle and welded inside the metal portion of the engine mount to strengthen this area (the owner I bought it from had one of the originals stress crack, allowing the engine to lower itself onto the crossmember, screwing up the geometry of the drive line enough to trash a universal joint!)

Yes...this is a PITA...but does not take as much time as engine removal/reinstallation.
 
Agreed. The port side mount is the 'challenging' one so do it first /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

A stout piece of wood to spread the load across the oil pan and a good jack will be fine for taking the engine load off the mount(s).
