Change wheels with hubs?

Anthony,
Glemon is correct. The back wheels take twice or more of the
stress forces than the front wheels. Nothin to do with pot holes. Everything to do with torque stress on the spokes in both directions.
Proof;
I just replaced a set of chrome Dunlap wire wheels with
a new set of Dayton wire wheels because many spokes were broken only after 5000 miles. Both back wheels had most of the broken spokes, ( 12 on one rear, 13 on the other ). But one front wheel had no broken spokes, the other front had only 2 broken spokes. The back wheels take more of a punishment than the front.

edk, how are you? ya dont want me to get started again about what i think of the new "dunlaps" and yes the rear does take a bit more punishment, ive never encountered a broken spoke on any of my healeys perhaps some of our friends are driving these cars a little too hard, one can not treat a spoke wheel with the indifference of a stamped wheel especially if its old,weve all seen guys race thier cars with spoke wheels so we know they are tough and they hold up pretty well under that punishment my feeling is if you want these wheels to last take care of them dont "flog" em.-no tire burns in a healey please! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

So...

In the new spoked wheels on the market nowadays, are the 72 spoke rims more rigid than the 60 spoke rims? I have 72 spokes now and was going to replace with the same in Daytons. I was told that the 60 spoke rims will run, last, and drive the same on a Healey.

Any comments or opinions??

Well;

60 spoke wire wheels will run just fine on the big Healey. Additionally, I think the chrome ones look nicer and are easier to clean. However, a 72 spoke wheel is significantly stronger.---Fwiw--Keoke

If I had it to do all over again I would have gone with 60 spokers rather than the 72s. The 72s weigh more, are more complicated to clean, and have a slightly different appearance profile than the 60s. The only real advantage is they are stronger but, frankly, if you are buying Daytons and you aren't racing this will make no difference.

For daily driving with zest, the 60 spoke Daytons should do well and not give me much to worry about? James at BWW said they would be just fine on big Healeys. I kinda like the sparser look they have...

I have had two broken spokes on Dunlops. 60 spoke painted rims that are 5 years old. One was done during a solo timed run two years ago and the other somewhere on the 2400 mile trip from San Francisco to Richland WA and back. Both were different rims, both rears.

If I had a do over I would have avoided the false economy of Dunlops and gone with Daytons.

Live, Drive and Learn I guess.

I'll be replacing tires at the end of this season and will have the spoke replaced at the same time. For now it is my spare (with one spoke painted orange to remind me it is broken) tire.

One thing that I have learned. I cannot find a broken spoke by tapping it with a pencil or favorite tapping tool, but if I wiggle one by one I can find the culprit. I do a through check out before and after such long trips or solo racing.

The wheels that I have now have no broken spokes. Just the hubs are starting to wear. I plan on Daytons. Still a little undecided about 60 or 72 spokes. I going to order them this week so they arrive when the shocks come back from rebuild. Then I can test drive and tune everything else.

How does everyone like the poly bushings? Since I have the front apart for a shock rebuild, I am going to change out the bushings. I replaced the rears about a year ago with rubber bushings from Moss (when I changed the front and rear springs). But they are already starting to tear up. The shackles are rubbing on the springs.
