Cell Phone recommendations

My GF's cell phone died so she got a new phone and switched providers (her old service had lousy coverage around her home). She picked up an LG VX9900 "EnV" which, by most of the reviews, is a terrific phone - typical ratings are 8 out of 10 on the various sites. The problem is, the audio quality on it is absolutely hideous. No highs, just flat, lifeless, difficult to understand, muffled, weak audio.

Careful reading of the various reviews seems to show that most of the writers want to expound on the text-messaging, camera, and music playing abilities of this (and most other similar phones) rather than the audio.

One review gave it an 8 out of 10 (average for this phone), said it had lots of "pros" and the only "con" was an error or two they had with it. In the review the say the audio quality is "fair to poor"...well what the heck is the point of the phone if your sound like crud!?

But anyway, back to my point... after using it for a couple of days I think she's going return it, but what to try next?

Any recommendations?

Hi Scott,
Mine is discontinued but it sounds good. Is she looking for a phone from a specific provider? My smartphone was only through AT&T.

Well, she switched to Verizon from T-Mobile because of coverage issues. The switch was convenient when her old phone died, no contract issues, etc.

I wasn't very specific in the first post - she need a fancy phone with PDA functions, internet, etc. We use text messaging and the regular 'old voice functions. That's it. She used the camera on her old phone, but very rarely.

Anyhow, she talked to a rep this morning and she (the rep) was surprised to hear a complaint about that particular phone. It's one of those phones that everyone raves about, including the rep. Muddy audio (both send and receive) isn't right. Sounds like she has a defective phone...

I have the next model up, the LG Voyager. I rather liked the touchscreen, which I felt was easier to use for dialing than the buttons on the EnV. I don't feel the sound quality's all that bad, for a cell phone. I can definitely tell it's not a landline, but I can tell that with any mobile phone-they all sound crummy to me.

But, it sounds like you may have a defective unit. Maybe the shop will let you try a different one? Bear in mind, what you think is awful sound quality may be fine to others-I've commented on the sound quality of most cell phones I've used, and people always think I'm talking nonsense, but the majority of my telephone usage over the last few years has been via landline, either at home or work.

The rep at my Cingular shop in town said I couldn't buy a better phone than the LG. Better reception, less dropped calls Radio, TV, internet, email, camera, stops hair loss and gives you a larger [censored]. Since then the reception and call dropping has increased and the boss at the shop said I never should have bought it. They won't replace it or give me any recourse so I'm dropping 'The New ATT' as soon as I can figure out who has something more reliable. All I want is to be able to make and receive calls. Any recommendations?

Sounds like the same problem!

For the record, I'm on ATT (formerly Cingular) using a Motorola L2 - a few frills on the phone, but very little. The quality of the phone itself has been great and I have very few complaints with it. Cingular (now ATT) has been fine too. Never had an issue with the service or them, not one. Occasionally I've been in an area where my GF's phone had reception and I didn't, but that's been rare.

Oddly, AT&T formerly Cingular, was formerly AT&T. When Cingular came along, it seemed the sales staff was replaced with people that didn't know anything about the product. I still like it better than Verizon, which cripples their phones. Both a friend and I had Razr's at one time. His (Verizon) couldn't receive bluetooth from a computer for custom ringtones. I had to bluetooth to mine, then text message him the ringtone.

See, I've had the exact opposite experience with AT&T/Cingular. Absolutely garbage reception, range, and customer service. This was both with landline and cellular phones. My father still has it (through work), and it's constantly dropping calls and half the time it won't accept text messages either. YMMV, I figure it has to do with whatever region of the country you're in.

AT&T, as my old Verizon wouldn't work in Europe. Blackberry Curve, which is my first "smart phone". Very pleased with both and haven't had any problem with their customer service. Had Sprint a few years ago and it was the pits - never again.

Also, I got AT&T to unlock my phone, so it can be used on anyones 3G network. That way if I go to Europe for an extended period, I can swap out the sim card and only get charged local rates.
