Hi all.

I'm looking to install a CD player into my 1974 Midget. I would like to install it into the stock location and I'll probably put 2 new small speakers behind the grill. Like the car itself, I'd like to keep this as simple as possible.

I was looking to buy this one as it has a somewhat classic look, but with modern technology. My concern is the depth of the unit. I read a thread here, from a couple months back, about people putting a plywood spacer behind the console to accomodate the added depth of the player...so the player doesn't protrude out front.

The player I'm looking at is 7 inches deep, and the console is only 6 inches deep. I'm afraid this will be too much of a disparity for a spacer to accomodate. So my question is...what kind of cd players have you guys found that fit nicely into this space. I don't need anything fancy...just something that'll play radio and CDs, and something that has a "classic" look. Or if anyone has any ideas for how to make the above cd player work here...as I really like its appearance.

I didn't see the dimensions on that, but if it said 7" mounting depth required, then you will have problems with shifter interference regardless of the spacer.

Something else to consider is the cost involved. The midget has no security and frequently leaks/sweats. So, I went to my local discount store and bought the cheapest cd/tuner they had. It is a Pioneer of some sort. With a 3/4" spacer board it fits fine. It has gotten wet and nobody has attempted to steal it (that I know of), and I park my car in some pretty "risky" areas on regular occasions.

I'd reccomend looking at Nakamichi. They're a very high end manufacturer in general, but have some competive priced units. The best part is, they don't have any of the flash or gimmicks of current players.

IIRC, they also had a small size model last time I looked that might fit better.

Trevor - The unit I mentioned is actually relatively cheap on eBay and has a removable face plate (that can be put in the lockable glove compartment). But it looks like it'll be impossible to make it work here with the depth. I'll look around locally for something real cheap, like you said...and see if I come up with anything. Thanks for the help.

Ben - I perused Nakamichi's website...real neat site. Scanning through eBay, though, they seem a bit too pricey for me. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Anybody else have any other suggestions?

I put an Alpine cd player in my 79 Midget, works great except I can't insert/remove a cd in 1st or 3rd gear. Shifter is in the way.
