CD player install question....

...and a silly question at that.

Has anyone installed a CD player in the stock location? Could you actually put discs in it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif I figure the shifter is in the way, but thought I'd ask.

I'm thinking I'll replace the rear cardboard piece between the trunk and cab, and mount some speakers in there, and I could mount the CD player in the same locatoin, but it would be much more convenient up front...

Anyway, just curious what the rest of you have worked out.

Oh, speaking of which, I'm not worried at all about the wiring in the positive ground car, i've got that all figured out, it's just the ergonomics that are driving me nuts! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

One of ours is not stock. Mine (w/o anything at this time), is where the glove box would be on the dash (above the passenger's knee's).

From the sounds of it -- your's is in front of the gear shifter. Worse case -- you change CD's @ traffic lights or add a cassette with a cd player on the passenger seat or floor for ease of use (& adapter doesn't come out all that often).

Ever consider XM ? I was thinking of adding a cheapy radio for the FM Modulator and moving the car kit over from the main car to this. Great sound and no fuss (just click's in like a cell phone or similar device).

Another option, if you are going to be mounting the speakers between the trunk and cab anyway, would be to put a CD changer there. You could put a deck that could control the changer in the stock location. It obivously costs a little more, but it might be a bit more user friendly. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I mounted mine in the stock console, and I have no problem. But, I have a datsun 5speed, and I put a spacer behind the console to accomodate the depth of the cd player.

Rob, I've got a CD player in the stock position in front of the gear shifter. My CD player even sticks out half an inch or so, still no problem inserting a CD...gotta be in 2nd or 4th gear though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Hope this helps.

Me too. CD player in stock positon that is. Mine sticks out too and I don't like that. Will try the fit in the old speaker grill cutout. If it fits, I fab up a bracket and do it!

Roger the second or fourth gear to change CD's! My experience too but it's better than not having the radio/CD player!

Move the console out 1/2 inch by making the panel behind it out of 5/8" plywood. (cut a hole oin the center to give the stereo cleance). I used this solution from Ryan over on the mgbbs.

great, thanks for the info guys, I wouldn't have thought about having to make a spacer back there....glad I asked!
